Background: Dental handpieces are contaminated easily during clinical use, but they are often difficult to disinfect. The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the antibacterial effect of sodium dichloroisocyanurate(NaDCC; Sani-Care, Medentech, Wexford, Ireland) on dental handpieces. Methods: Surface swap sampling was conducted on used dental handpieces for detection of bacterial contamination. Surface of handpiece, such as head, neck and handle, was sampled at 3 min after disinfection using 300 ppm Sani-Care or 70% ethanol, respectively. The microbiologic tests on the surfaces were evaluated 30 times each in the two groups. Results: Detection rates were measured on the group of 300 ppm Sani-Care (0%) and the other group of 70% ethanol (43.3%). It is found that after disinfection with Sani-care the dental handpiece rapidly achieved sterility. In the case of ethanol, the positive rate was clearly observed. Conclusions: Disinfection using 300 ppm Sani-Care effectively decreased contamination state on dental handpieces.
